Step 1 : Choose the template.
There are two ways to choose from :
- Birthday hat template hat has a small opening at the tip for gluing fun hat toppers such as a large pompom or a curly ribbon.
- A plain cone shaped template for making birthday hats without toppers.
Step 2 : Print out your chosen template on an A-4 size or letter size cardstock. You can use plain cardstock or go for a patterned one like I did.
Step 3 : Cut out the template.
Step 4 : Now decorate the template. Draw or paint patterns and other designs. You can also put stickers. ( If you have printed template, you won’t need to decorate it or just add a few accents like some glitter glue).
Step 5 : Add a topper. You can add fun toppers like curly ribbons, crepe paper strips or feathers. Tape or glue them at the back of the template as close to the tip as possible.
Step 6 : Now roll the template into a cone shape.
Step 7 : Now, unroll the template. Apply glue or double sided tape. Bring the hat’s opposite side towards the tab, aligning its edges with the tab’s dashed line.
Step 8 : Its time to add a chin strap. Punch a pair of holes on the opposite sides of the base of the hat. Tie the ends of an elastic string in the holes you have just punched to create a chin strap. Adjust the length of the elastic string chin strap for a comfortable fit. Your hat is ready!
